HC-SR04 is a kinetic sculpture/robot with the characteristics of a sentient being, where during the first encounter, the logic behind its actions is unknown. After entering the room Me and HC-SR04 acknowledge each other’s presence. But the object needs to be tamed – by observing its behaviour I’m trying to determine the logic of its actions. Here comes in sympathetic magical thinking – I’m observing
the moving object, and I’m wondering, what dictates these movements. By analysing the behaviour, we attribute character traits: the movement could be delicate and welcoming – The Robot is greeting us, the movement is chaotic – is the robot threatening?
This lies in the observer’s analysis – HC-SR04 is a vessel, which is filled with the interpretation of character by the viewer.
